Volunteer for the 3 to 5 County Commissioners Petition Drive.
Douglas County has grown to over 370,000 residents, yet it is still managed by only three county commissioners. There is a lively and enthusiastic campaign in progress to place an initiative on the November general election ballot to increase the number of county commissioners from 3 to 5. A county as sizable as Douglas should have more than 3 individuals making decisions that impact thousands of residents. Expanding to 5 commissioners would ensure better representation, enhance accountability, and decrease the concentrated decision-making that exists today. Please note that this initiative is unrelated to our current board of commissioners and is a non-partisan effort.
The petition asks voters to consider whether the Board of County Commissioners should be expanded from 3 members to 5 members. Additionally, it gives voters two options for expansion: either 5 commissioners elected by district or 3 commissioners by district with 2 elected at large. If voters approve this in November, the new structure would be implemented in 2028.
To place this issue on the 2026 ballot, we need to collect 20,000 signatures by July 15. We currently have approximately 40 petition circulators gathering signatures throughout the county, but we require additional help. In Colorado, petition circulators must undergo training to ensure the validity of signatures. The training lasts about 30 minutes.
We need all hands on deck! Visit the 3to5 website to learn about becoming a petition circulator. If you are unable to volunteer to be a petition circulator at this time, the next best thing would be to donate to the cause.
