What's Happening

DougCO Activism Task Force , January 2026

First, a message from Heidi Bonilla, Douglas County Activism Task Force Facilitator, regarding the murder of Renee Good in Minneapolis:

Hello everyone,

I had intended to start our first email of 2026 with a Happy New Year's wish to you all, but that hardly feels appropriate now. Let me instead take a moment to acknowledge some feelings that I imagine many or all of you may share.

I'm angry.

And scared.

And tired.

And confused.

Renee Good was my age and had a young child, like me. And she was just trying to look out for her neighbors and her community, like all of us. And her life was snuffed out in a split second.

Those in power are praising it, calling her a "domestic terrorist," trying to make an example out of her to silence our resistance through fear.

The same voices who called the riotous, violent mob on Jan 6, 2021 "patriots" are now saying Renee got what she deserved because she didn't "comply." It doesn't make sense. It's not supposed to.

Americans took to the streets en masse last weekend to demand Justice for Renee and demand that ICE by pulled out of communities across the country where they are violently harassing innocent people. Here in Douglas County, there were two such protests. Larkspur had close to 50 people show up, and Parker had a few hundred!

We cannot let Renee's murder get pushed aside as more horrible news comes in day by day. We MUST continue to call Congress (for us, that unfortunately means Lauren Boebert) and demand a full, transparent investigation into Renee's case and that ICE no longer be given free rein to terrorize our communities. We MUST continue to SHOW UP, STAND UP, and SPEAK UP every opportunity we get!!

They're NOT going to terrorize me into going silent. And we WILL continue to fight for the day when Trump's regime is held accountable for its crimes against the people of the United States of America and the world.

-Heidi B.

And, here is a call for action:

Department of Homeland Security funding runs out on January 30!
Department of Homeland Security funding runs out on January 30!

A new funding bill must be passed by congress to keep ICE in business. We have a golden opportunity to put significant restrictions on ICE and ensure it doesn't get a single penny more to enable its brutality.

We need to demand that every Democrat in congress votes no on the DHS funding bill unless it:

  • Rejects increased funding for ICE and Border Control

  • Restricts ICE and Border Patrol's ability to conduct dragnet arrest operations

  • Ends Border Patrol deployments to our cities

  • Limits DHS's reprogramming and transfer authority.

Everyone should call our Senators Bennet (303-455-7600/202-224-5852), and Hickenlooper (303-244-1628/202-224-5941) and demand Congress rein in ICE and Border Patrol.
